MISSOULA- Here's something many of us have on our 2012 '"to do list"- eat healthier and it's not necessarily easier said than done.
Most of us would say we want to eat healthier. but actually doing that can be very confusing so Dr. Brad Pickhardt sat down with dietician Sara Engberg to get some simple and straightforward advice.
"Number one, most important, is increasing your fruits and veggies throughout the day. You can do that by starting to put fruit in your breakfast and adding veggies to your lunch and dinner and [then] going back and adding a fruit or vegetable to your snack, aiming for high fiber, any food that's going to be over three grams per serving. We want to try to get 25 to 30 grams a day," Engberg advised.
And if we aim for that it forces us to choose whole grain foods, fresh fruits and vegetables and beans, things like that. And...keep your portions in check, [find] some time of strategy knowing what you're intaking and how many calories your taking in and using some type of tracking took to help you," Engberg continued.
Changing your dinner way can help you keep your portion sizes in check. but some people they measure things out just off the get go so you know off the bad how many calories you're intaking per day. Another way to reduce some healthy eating is by looking at your environment and looking at food challenges that are in your line of sight and getting them out-of-the-way, out of sight out of mind," she concluded.
The bottom line is that eating healthier doesn't mean cutting out your favorite foods entirely. just making a few changes. and those changes will be more likely to last if you make them gradually. You can find use easy online calorie tracking program such as www.sparkspeople.com and www.calorieking.com to help you eat healthier.
