WHITEFISH- National Geographic Magazine has named the Whitefish Winter Carnival as
the 10th best in the world and 5th best in the United States and it all starts Saturday in downtown Whitefish.
Whitefish Winter Carnival Prime Minister Paul Johannsen says the carnival royalty were busy running around spreading excitement for this weekend and knighting Muldown Elementary students before the major event.
"We've gone from class to class, we knighted some teachers that are retiring in 4th grade pod and visited with the kids and asked them questions about carnival, making sure that they're coming to the carnival and then answering lots of great questions from the kids."
Johannsen says the carnival is for visitors and the local community to gather to celebrate the winter season.
"It's a part of Whitefish's heritage and the whole meaning of the carnival is to get out, see people in the community, celebrate winter."
Whitefish Winter Carnival Queen of the Snows Carol Atkinson says by Saturday downtown Whitefish will look a lot different, all the cars lined up on the street will be replaced by people trying to get a glimpse at the famous Whitefish Winter Carnival Parade.
"People are creating crazy floats, haciendas and we're going to be wearing sombreros, and serapes and it's just going to be a lot of fun."
Johannsen says the community has been behind it all.
"It's a huge effort. I've just been amazed in being involved this year to see all the people
behind the scenes that make this such a great carnival."
Last year the Whitefish Winter Carnival royalty took their float to the Calgary Stampede where it took 1st place. The group plans to do the same this year.
